 Morgan:
Welcome back to another episode of Ask the Expert, where we highlight experts across multiple industries who are making an impact. I’m Morgan Yonge, joined today by Rodney JB Clements with RN Enterprises. How are you?

Rodney:
Great. How are you, Morgan?

Morgan:
Good morning. Good to see you.

Rodney:
Thank you.

Morgan:
So you are the expert in IV therapy, an IV nurse. Tell me everything that you guys do.

Rodney:
Okay, great. Yes, I’m actually in the home infusion therapy field. I’ve been a nurse for more than 30 years. I started many years ago at the University of Florida. Go Gators.

I was in the Navy with the military in the Marines for several years, and I specialized in emergency medicine and pediatrics. I became an IV specialist over the years, and many years ago I got into home infusion therapy.

And that’s what we do now. We provide therapy to people in their home. These patients typically go to their doctor, get diagnosed, and get prescribed medications that you can now receive in the home.

Years ago you had to go to the hospital infusion centers, but almost everything now can be done in the home.

Morgan:
That’s incredible. So for people like me, civilians who don’t know much about the medical space, when I said IV therapy, what’s the difference between just IV therapy and infusion therapy?

Rodney:
Well, actually they’re interchangeable. Infusion is IV. We do subcutaneous injections as well and some other training.

But the term home infusion therapy is kind of our trademarked term for what we’re actually doing. We go into the home. Infusion therapy could be any IV therapy in the hospital or infusion center, but ours is specific to the home.

Morgan:
So can you guys do anything from chemotherapy to what all do you help with?

Rodney:
Yes, actually we can. A lot of therapies that you can think of, from immunoglobulin therapy that treats autoimmune disorders and immune deficiency disorders, to biologics and anti-inflammatory drugs for people with Crohn’s and colitis and different diseases.

We can do IV antibiotics, steroids, hydration therapy, everything from enzyme replacement. There are all kinds of drugs coming out on the market now.

Many of these drugs that you see on TV advertised are actually IV drugs, and a patient will need to go into an infusion center.

We can send a nurse right to your house, an expert nurse that can get your IV on the first stick, somebody that you can trust and get to know over time, and provide the therapy to you with the same outcomes, better patient satisfaction, and cheaper.

Morgan:
That’s fantastic. So you help with everything across the board that you need injected into your body to make you well again or at least just a bit better.

Rodney:
Yes.

Morgan:
That’s amazing. So what are some of the biggest problems that you’re seeing in the industry? And as the expert, how are you solving them?

Rodney:
Many patients are going to infusion centers now and don’t realize that they can get the same therapy at home.

It can be frustrating because you have a different nurse each time, and it might take three times longer than it should, and you might not get the quality that you should get.

Some patients are newly diagnosed and a little bit scared or unsure. People do their own research, but our nurses are experts in all of these therapies.

We don’t have warm bodies just coming out. Wound care nurses are great, but we specialize in IV therapy.

Patients that work with us realize that they’re going to get an expert and can receive their therapy better than they can anywhere else.

Often it’s the most important thing in the patient’s life, getting this therapy.

Morgan:
And how do patients find out about you guys? Is it through their primary care physician?

Rodney:
Well, RN Enterprises is a team of infusion nurses across the country, and a patient can always request an RN Enterprises nurse.

A patient will get diagnosed and the physician will send the prescription to a specialty pharmacy, where they will ship the medication and supplies directly to the patient.

We subcontract with the specialty pharmacy. Somewhere along the line that’s where we come in.

The patient can ask for us or the pharmacy partner will ask us. They know they’re going to get a good nurse and we can staff very timely with an excellent nurse.

More and more we’re becoming the go-to team of infusion nurses to see these patients.

Morgan:
How are you vetting your nurses these days?

Rodney:
Great question. Like I said earlier, we’re not just hiring any nurse out of the hospital.

These nurses have to be experts at inserting peripheral IV catheters, starting an IV, working with a PICC line, a central line, a port, any kind of IV access device.

Our nurses have to be experts. Often they’re ER nurses or critical care nurses that have transitioned into the home infusion space.

You asked about how we send the nurses. We have over 400 to 500 nurses applying to get onto our team every month, which has been incredible.

Most of them are not qualified, to be honest. We only hire about five or six percent of the nurses that apply.

So we are hiring very highly qualified infusion nurses.

We have a funnel where they have to get through certain stages. We do an hour-long video interview with them. They have to know what they’re talking about because they’re working independently.

They have to be able to go into the home and be confident.

Of course we always provide education and training as needed. There’s always new therapies coming out.

But our nurses are already experienced infusion nurses who are already performing the job.

Morgan:
That’s awesome. That’s so important. So where do you see the future of the industry going?

Rodney:
The home infusion industry is booming right now. It is expanding exponentially every year. More and more therapies and more and more patients can get therapy at home.

There are many different specialty pharmacies that are popping up. There are franchises all over the country.

As the industry is expanding, it’s also consolidating. There are a lot of pharmacies and nursing agencies consolidating.

We are a free and independent team of infusion nurses run and owned and operated by nurses.

So it’s appealing for nurses to come work for us. Traditionally nurses had to work for the pharmacy or work for somebody else.

There are a lot of private equity and venture capitalists trying to get into the space.

We don’t have any partners. We’re free and independent, and we work with all of the pharmacies across the country.

Morgan:
That’s so exciting. That’s very good.

So for RN Enterprises, what are some of the goals that you have for the company?

Rodney:
That’s a great question because I mentioned there’s hundreds of nurses trying to get into the space. There’s also hundreds of patients that need the therapy, and it’s hard to staff all across the country at the same time.

So there’s a little disconnect.

We have created and just started RN University, which is going to be a program of intensive training for nurses to help them transition from the hospital into the home infusion space.

It’s going to provide training with a national nurse educator and a team of instructors. There will be online, video, and even hands-on training with patients.

There are a lot of great nurses in the hospital, but they just haven’t crossed the finish line to get into their car and drive to somebody’s house.

There are some do’s and don’ts and tricks of the trade.

So we’re going to provide that training and help transition many of these nurses onto our team so we can service even more patients.

We want to continue to expand. We started in Florida. We’re in about 40 states now. We have close to 600 nurses.

We are waiting any day now to have our license in New York, which is going to be a very big market, and in California.

We’ll have home health care agencies in those states just like we do in Texas now. We have an office in Dallas.

We have 11 offices in Florida, and that’s been our home base.

But we are expanding across the country. We have a lot of goals, and I feel like we have a really great team, a very strong clinical nursing team, and just the best in the business.

So I’m really proud of what we’re doing.

Morgan:
That is so incredible, so rewarding and fulfilling on many levels.

Thank you.

Rodney:
Thank you.

Morgan:
Thank you for what you’re doing. It’s always a pleasure having you on the show.

Rodney:
Thank you.
